How to Win Candidates with a Winning Career Site

Optimising a career site is essential to recruiter success. Engaging copy, pleasing visuals, emotional connection, ease of access and detailed information all factor in to encouraging a potential candidate to apply. The consequences of not pumping your career site to meet these criteria could mean less interest, bad press and ultimately a loss of qualified individuals to fill your positions.

Here are some suggestions to keep in mind when developing your career site for maximum return on your investment:

Maximise Mobility

The worst thing that you can do that may limit applicants is to have a career site that is difficult to navigate or lacks appeal on mobile. Millennials especially are demanding of speed and efficiency when it comes to conquering their job search. Losing out on qualified and ambitious candidates eager to jumpstart their careers happens when your website doesn’t load well on mobile and is missing many of the features you worked so hard to include.

Boasting Your Brand

One of the major reasons a potential candidate seeks you out is the reputation and visibility of your brand. Not only do you need to focus on how your brand looks in print but sending a message that it is ideal for your potential candidates is a key factor to consider. Linking to success stories, brand history, testimonials and advertising that promotes your brand as part of your career site can lift it up to where it deserves to be and entices candidates to take notice.

Employee Value Proposition

An established Employee Value Proposition (EVP) is a significant part of why a candidate will pursue a job posting. Fostering interest in the why and how your company will profit your candidate in addition to their salary can be a deciding factor in why they will want to join on. Job perks like travel, insurance, vacation time, etc. are all important supplements to how a candidate will discern what’s in it for them in a positive light. Benefits like professional development credit, flexible hours and career ladder upgrades, if available, are all important to outline.

Unique and Functioning Ad Copy

Photos and video, headings and descriptions, and links and tags are all key elements of a successful career site that works for you. If your career site is unoriginal, has broken links, lacks visual appeal or doesn’t create a ‘wow’ factor of sorts, then it’s not accomplishing its goals. Be sure to include attractive, carefully designed and written content, as well as photos that reach out. It’s a mistake to be paling and failing alongside your competitors by not being the top dog when it comes to effectually drawing a candidate into your orbit.

It’s All in the Details

Incomplete descriptions of job duties, responsibilities and benefits will not draw candidates away from other career sites which surpass their expectations as job seekers in your industry. It’s a competitive world out there and particularly so when it comes down to choosing a career. That’s why it’s so important to develop and present a career site that is easy to navigate, contains clearly stated details of your posting and includes an application section that can help you select the best candidates to interview. Allowing for applicant feedback is also an important feature that will net more insight as to how your career site is doing.

The recruiter who puts the company’s best foot forward on a well thought out and well-appointed career site utilising these tips will have the bonus of more frequent leads and better-quality candidates to bank on.
